The Government has reaffirmed its commitment to modernising public services through technology, with the introduction of the Electronic Road Management System set to play a key role in transforming road management and traffic enforcement in Zimbabwe.
Speaking on the initiative, Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe said the country recognises the need to digitalise and computerise critical systems in order to improve efficiency and service delivery.
"We realised the importance of digitalisation several years ago and developed an ICT Integration Strategy within the Ministry of Home Affairs," said the Minister. "The strategy comprises several interconnected sub-systems that communicate with each other to create one integrated solution for Home Affairs."
The Electronic Road Management System forms part of the Zimbabwe Republic Police's broader Integrated Information System, an ambitious programme aimed at digitising police operations and creating a more efficient and conducive operating environment across the country.
According to the Minister, the new technology is intended to help police officers, strengthening and enhancing the work they already perform. By leveraging digital tools, authorities expect to improve road safety management, traffic monitoring, compliance enforcement and overall service delivery.
The public also welcomed this move, atleast drivers will be monitored and they will be less reckless on the roads, said Patrick Moyo.
The project also highlights Zimbabwe's growing technological capabilities, with local expertise driving its development. Minister Kazembe praised the collaboration between TelOne and the Zimbabwe Republic Police, describing the initiative as a testament to the innovation and ingenuity of Zimbabwean citizens.
"This project is a product of our own people. We are witnessing tremendous progress through the partnership between TelOne and the Zimbabwe Republic Police," he said.
The Smart Roads initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the country's broader digital transformation agenda, positioning technology at the centre of safer, smarter and more efficient road management systems.
