Chitungwiza-
The Municipality of Chitungwiza has ordered the removal of all pool tables operating at unauthorized locations across the town, citing growing concerns over public safety, drug abuse and illegal activities associated with some of the facilities.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the local authority directed operators of pool tables situated at undesignated sites, including residential areas, open parking spaces, tuckshops, shebeens, roadsides and public transport termini, to remove the facilities and any related illegal structures within seven working days.
The municipality said it had received reports that some of the venues were being used as centres for drug dealing and substance abuse, particularly among young people, posing a threat to community well-being and public safety.
Failure to comply with the directive will result in the confiscation of pool tables and possible legal action, according to the notice. The municipality said it would work closely with law enforcement agencies to enforce the order.
The council has also instructed all district offices to immediately stop issuing permits related to pool tables pending a review of existing permits and regulations governing the facilities.
The move forms part of broader efforts by the local authority to address rising concerns over drug and substance abuse. The municipality announced plans to establish a day-care rehabilitation centre at Utano in Zengeza 4 and a 24-hour rehabilitation centre at Tatenda Tavern to provide treatment, counselling, rehabilitation and reintegration services for affected individuals.
Residents have been urged to support the initiative by reporting illegal activities linked to drug and substance abuse and participating in community programmes aimed at protecting young people.
