As winter tightens its grip across Zimbabwe, many small businesses are experiencing a seasonal slowdown as consumers reduce spending and prioritize essential household needs.
Informal traders, vendors and small retail operators say customer traffic has declined significantly in recent weeks, affecting sales and profitability. Businesses that rely heavily on outdoor activities, cold beverages, ice cream sales and open-air markets are among the hardest hit during the colder months.
Economic analyst John Robertson said seasonal changes often influence consumer behaviour, with households directing more resources towards heating, warm clothing and school-related expenses.
Street vendors in Harare have reported reduced sales as fewer people spend time outdoors, while operators of recreational facilities and outdoor entertainment businesses have also seen a drop in patronage.
However, some sectors are benefiting from the cold weather. Businesses selling winter clothing, blankets, heaters, firewood and hot food products are recording increased demand as consumers seek warmth.
Retailers have responded by introducing winter promotions and diversifying their product offerings to attract customers and maintain revenue streams during the season.
Business leaders say adapting to changing consumer needs remains critical for survival, urging entrepreneurs to identify products and services that align with seasonal demand.
With winter expected to continue for several weeks, many businesses are hoping for improved consumer spending while adjusting operations to navigate the challenges posed by the cold season.
