Zimbabwe is witnessing a surge in demand for tomato seeds and seedlings as farmers move to take advantage of soaring tomato prices caused by a sharp decline in supply across the country.
The shortage has become evident in major vegetable markets, including Mbare Musika, where tomatoes have become increasingly expensive due to limited availability. Traders and consumers alike are feeling the impact, with prices rising significantly in recent weeks.
Agronomist Lucy Kundai Zvaraya said the current shortage has triggered increased purchases of tomato seeds and seedlings as many seasonal farmers shift towards tomato production in anticipation of higher returns.
While the current prices are attractive to farmers, there is a strong possibility that the market could become saturated in the coming months as more producers enter the sector. If that happens, there is likely to have a price clash tomato prices may eventually decline, she said.
Commenting on the situation, Chrispen Matongo of Mambo Foods, who is involved in tomato sauce and chilli production, said seasonal weather conditions are largely responsible for the shortage.
"Tomato production is low during the winter season. Farmers with greenhouse facilities are the ones currently capable of supplying the market consistently. When a commodity becomes scarce, prices naturally increase," he explained.
The rising cost of tomatoes is also putting pressure on household budgets. A Kambuzuma resident, Mai Ropafadzo, said the vegetable has become increasingly difficult to afford.
"Tomatoes are now very expensive. I need about US$1 worth of tomatoes every day to feed my family," she said.
Vegetable vendors interviewed at various markets confirmed that supplies remain low, forcing traders to source tomatoes from neighbouring countries, including Zambia, to help meet local demand.
Industry experts believe that while consumers may continue to face high prices in the short term, the increased planting activity currently underway could improve supplies later in the season, potentially bringing relief to both households and businesses that rely on tomatoes as a key ingredient.
