The Government says it has intensified efforts to facilitate the safe return of Zimbabweans displaced by recent unrest in South Africa, with thousands of citizens already back in the country.

According to the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, about 3,624 Zimbabweans had been successfully repatriated by 26 June 2026. Authorities have deployed an inter-ministerial team at the Beitbridge Border Post to coordinate border clearance and provide assistance to returnees.

Government said logistical arrangements are being coordinated through several ministries following a directive from President Emmerson Mnangagwa to ensure every Zimbabwean wishing to return home receives support. Officials also acknowledged delays affecting some returnees, explaining that mandatory security verification procedures conducted by South African authorities have slowed the processing of some individuals.

To ease the transition, Treasury has extended duty concessions previously available to holders of the Zimbabwe Exemption Permit (ZEP). The measures allow qualifying returnees to import one motor vehicle under suspension of customs duty, while rebates also apply to eligible household and business property acquired before 31 December 2022. Authorities stressed that the concessions are intended to assist genuine returnees and will be subject to verification.

Government has also directed schools nationwide to enrol children returning from South Africa, saying no eligible learner should be denied access to education as families resettle in Zimbabwe.
