President Emmerson Mnangagwa today led the nation in paying final respects to National Hero Ambassador Victor Matemadanda at the National Heroes Acre, describing him as a fearless patriot whose life was dedicated to Zimbabwe's liberation, development and sovereignty.

Addressing mourners, the President said Ambassador Matemadanda's passing was a great loss to the nation, recalling their last meeting in April during commemorations of the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III's coronation in Eswatini. He said the late ambassador remained committed to strengthening Zimbabwe's relations with countries where he served until his final days.

President Mnangagwa said Ambassador Matemadanda's journey from joining the liberation struggle as a young man to serving in the Zimbabwe National Army, Government, Parliament, ZANU PF and the diplomatic service reflected unwavering loyalty, discipline and patriotism. He highlighted the late national hero's contribution to mobilising support during the liberation struggle, championing the welfare of war veterans and preserving liberation heritage sites in Mozambique.

The President urged Zimbabweans to honour Ambassador Matemadanda's legacy by embracing unity, hard work and national development. He called on citizens at home and in the diaspora to contribute towards building a modern and prosperous Zimbabwe, saying the late national hero's commitment to service should inspire future generations. He concluded by saluting Ambassador Matemadanda as a liberation war veteran, nation builder, commissar and diplomat whose legacy will endure.
