HARARE – Cabinet has approved a nationwide response to curb illegal mining following reports of widespread environmental destruction and public safety risks in Bindura Municipality and Bindura Rural District Council.
An assessment presented to Cabinet found that illegal mining activities are taking place within residential areas, public infrastructure corridors and land earmarked for future urban expansion.
According to Cabinet, the unregulated mining has damaged roads and railway infrastructure, polluted water sources and contributed to increased cases of silicosis, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, as well as drug and substance abuse.
Cabinet has resolved to establish a national task force to coordinate Government action against illegal mining. Authorities will also review existing penalties to impose stiffer fines and strengthen law enforcement against offenders.
Government said the interventions will adopt a Whole-of-Government approach involving relevant ministries and agencies.
